Universal circuit breakers used to be called frame breakers and universal circuit breaker manufacturers usually have a steel frame. All components are mounted in the frame. They are generally used for main switches in power supplies and switches near the power end of branch circuits. Non-selective protection is limited to the current and general types, which can be delayed-action and instantaneous-action. They are usually used for switches near the mains and branch side of the power supply. When used for DC circuits, circuit breakers for power distribution generally have a capacity of 600 - 6000 A; fast and general types are available. For fast circuit breakers, they can be used to protect silicon rectifier equipment; for general purpose circuit breakers, they can be used to protect general DC equipment.
